Footsteps of the Famous
The architect Jacob van Campen was then commissioned to build a stone theatre in 1632. Besides many Dutch plays those by Shakespeare, Molière, Voltaire and Corneille were performed. Antonio Vivaldi himself conducted the theatre orchestra at the time of the 100th anniversary in 1737.
Celebrity visitors included the Prince of Orange, the King of Poland, the Tsar of Russia, the Elector of Brandenburg and Cosimo di Medici.
May, 11th 1772 was a black day in the theatre's history. The complex burned down completely. The site was sold in 1773 to the Regents of the Roman Catholic Old and Poor People's Office, which was the most important Catholic charity in those days. This Foundation was to remain the owner of the complex until 1998. |
