Our people’s person: meet Brian Verrijp!

Tell us a little bit about yourself… Brian Verrijp, pleased to meet you! Born & raised in Dordrecht, a village near Rotterdam, brother of a twin sister and living in Amsterdam for over 7 years now. I studied International Hotel Management in Breda, graduated in 2015 and gained experience in Food & Beverage and Front Office in The Netherlands and London before moving to Human Resources. I decided to go into Human Resources because in the end, it’s the people at a company who make it happen! So you recently joined The Dylan! What did you do before? How did this go? Yes I joined The Dylan in July 2021! Before moving to The Dylan, I worked in HR at Sheraton Amsterdam Airport Hotel, which is part of Marriott, the largest hotel chain in the world. I did this for 6,5 years in which I got to experience every aspect of HR and thereby gained my foundation in this field.. I had some great opportunities during my time at this chain: from living and working in London to doing a taskforce in Washington, and participating in trainings abroad to become Interim Director of HR at W Amsterdam. A journey to cherish. However, I felt that after all these years I was ready for something new and that’s how I got to The Dylan Amsterdam. I was curious about what it would be like to work for a stand-alone hotel compared to a major hotel chain and I was very drawn to their personal approach at a 5 star level. And what do you like about this role, what gives you energy in the morning? All my colleagues are the best thing about this job. As a hotel we take care of our guests, however it all starts with our team members. You can see our associates as our internal guests. That’s where I come in! Happy team, happy guests! How would you describe the culture at The Dylan? Family-like, warm and open. Everyone is willing to help each other. It’s cliché to say, but it really does feel like a family. All team members go above and beyond for both our guests as well as for their colleagues. It really is one team. From day one, I felt welcome and at home, which is a very genuine thing. When I walk around the hotel I can really see the passion and drive everyone has to make the stay of our guests a memorable one. It’s not always easy and it is definitely hard work, but the great thing is that everyone motivates one another and keeps each other going. Besides work, what do you like to do in your spare time? It wouldn’t surprise you, but I’m really a people’s person! I really like to socialize and Amsterdam is a lovely city with a great vibe so I like to take as much advantage of living here and explore the restaurants, bars and clubs on the weekend when I can! Moreover, I very much like to travel and to work  out a few days a week. What is your favourite place #insideTheDylan? This would definitely be our secluded garden. It feels like a hidden gem – peacefully hidden in the middle of busy Amsterdam. A perfect place to catch up with your friends while enjoying some delicious cocktails. I wish I had found this spot way earlier! Some of my friends discovered The Dylan since I started working here and during weekends I often receive messages of how much they are enjoying their lunch and cocktails.. how great!
